Pumpkin Girl Designs

Just in time for Cyber Monday, Pumpkin Girl and I have launched our new website. We are selling hand-crafted hair accessories…and more. It all started when I made Pumpkin Girl an elastic headband with silk flowers to match her ballet uniform leotard. Each level at her studio has a different color uniform, so while the girls are dressed exactly alike, they express their personality in their hair ornaments. They are allowed, and encouraged, to use a headband to keep the little wispy hairs off their face. And so an idea was formed and a business launched. We’ve got elastic headbands with three silk flowers like this one below, available in three colors of elastic and several flower choices. We’ve got flowers on clips in lots of different colors. Pumpkin Girl sticks them right next to her bun for class and tucked over her ear when her hair is down. We’ve even got some ribbon sculptures like this Nutcracker.

Within the week we’ll have the cutest little felt figures attached to snap clips. I can’t wait to share! No doubt you’ve seen Lego mini-movies all over the web, but I think this one is my all-time favorite.  If you’re a “Les Miz” fan, you’ve got to check this out.  It’s one of my favorite Les Miz songs to sing.  I usually sing the part of Enjolras (he’s the brunette in the video with the red shirt and big sword).  I know I’m a girl, but I’m also part French and I’ve got leadership issues. As in, I’m always trying to be the one in charge.  And people actually follow me.  Scary.  The Mac and Cheese Chronicles, coming to a barricade near you.

Several people have asked to see pictures of our new house, a request I’ve blissfully ignored.  We’ve lived here for 4 months now and those months have been filled with school work, scouts, dance and vacation.  Not to mention unpacking and decorating.  We’ve been having our dining room set slowly but surely restored to its original glory and battling what can only be described as zombie wasps.  But that’s a story for another time.  The point is, our house isn’t as presentable or as photogenic as I’d like it to be.  However, if I wait until it is, the children will be grown and out of the house and it will be time for us to downsize.  So here we go.

If you come in through our front door, the first room to your immediate right is the music room.  We don’t have need of a formal living room, so we moved our grand piano into the space and are attempting to created a somewhat formal but welcoming library/music/quiet area.  It’s going slowly since this is one of 3 rooms which we’ve never had before.

Look what I did yesterday:

I moved a ladder in!

Heh heh.  Actually, I did something I’ve wanted to do in our home for several years.  I added a quotation to the wall above the window.  Here, I’ll show you a close up:

It says, “If music be the food of Love, play on. -Shakespeare.”  How perfect is that for a music room?  I did it all myself, except for Philip bringing me the ladder.  Which we left there, since it looks so classy.

That’s the window at the front of the house.  Now walk with me towards that window, then to your right and we’re looking at the piano.

Doesn’t that look nice?  We need a lamp in here because this is the one room in the house that didn’t have some kind of overhead light.  The angel next to the stairs doesn’t actually live there.  My grandmother made her for me when I was oh…6 years old.  She (the angel) is waiting her turn for the washing machine since the years have been a little hard on her.

So my decorating dilema for the day is two-fold.  First – see the curtains in the front window?  I’m not too thrilled with the rod showing there.  The red curtains are always open and the sheers are always closed.  Any ideas for how to hide the rod?  Or just leave it?

Second – what sort of lamp should I get for the piano?  I’m thinking floor lamp.  The adjoining room is the dining room which has cherry wood Queen Anne furniture.

I’ve been without internet access for almost two weeks now, since the base Temporary Lodging Facility(you us civilians call it a hotel) has a shocking lack of wifi.  Thanks to my friend Jenn, who let me sit in her backyard and use her wifi while she was out of town, I’m here to let you all know that our move has gone well so far.

The packers only took 2 days.  However, the movers took 14 hours, so the truck didn’t pull away from the house until 1:30 in the morning.  Good times.

Pumpkin Girl’s dance recital was a lot of fun and Phil and Boo had a grand time at Cub Scout camp.  Philip had his last day in uniform and we closed on our house.  Last night we sat along the Potomac and watched the fireworks, surrounded by good friends. This morning we said goodbye to our church family and the parish where our children received a total of 5 Sacraments.  The nice thing about Philip being in the choir was that we sung all of our favorite songs during mass.

Tomorrow we head out on a four day journey to our new home.

It’s  a surreal experience, saying good bye to friends and to the Army, but knowing we’re saying hello to our first home and civilian life.

I can hardly wait!
