Bits of Summer
*Pumpkin Girl has been going to dance workshops for the last 3 weeks. First it was ballet focused, with 3 hours of dance every day plus stretch and conditioning classes. Some new muscle on her ached every day, including her arches! They also had classes on good nutrition, how to make a ballet bun and short talks by the guest instructors on their professional careers.
*Getting a lunch and snack together and driving to and from the dance studio every day sure takes a lot of getting used to. You know how people always tell homeschoolers, “I don’t know how you do it!” ? I don’t know how they do it!
*Boo went to scout camp last week. He left as a 2nd class scout and returned as a first class scout. He earned his wood working, leather working and swimming merit badges. It was tough having both him and Pumpkin Girl gone.
*Bip and I watched a lot of movies together during the week.
*Pipsqueak is very into eating solid food. He’s enjoyed everything I’ve offered him, but he loves blueberries in particular. He cries when I just get up to get him some more.
*I’m loving me some air conditioning in the afternoons! Not as much as I loved it when I set it around 70 and ran it from May to October. But that was back when we weren’t paying for electricity. But still, it’s nice to be able to say, “OK, it’s too hot. Everyone close the windows and turn your a/c on!”
*The weather is actually quite nice. It gets hot, clouds over, rains, clears and cools. Every day.
*I’m a little more than halfway through my second watercolor class. More pictures to come.
*My children are begging me to let them buy ice cream from the ice cream man. It’s just so expensive! I’ll probably let them this week since it’s going to be so hot. But just the one time since we can buy the same ice cream at the store for much cheaper.
*I actually don’t like summer. The only thing to love about summer (for me) is knowing that as soon as it’s over, Fall will be here.
So how about you? What’s your favorite thing about summer?
I’m looking forward to seeing your watercolors. I do a little water-coloring and I’m not impressed with my results. Everyone else’s always look better to me. 🙂
I love summer. It’s not my favorite – but it makes me happy to not wear 4 layers of clothing for a few weeks out of the year.
Robin – I have to agree that less layers is a good thing!
My favorite thing about summer is the same as yours–that it is followed by fall. I get so tired of being hot. We are in the middle of a cool snap this weekend, though. Heat index only got up to 97′ It’s been in triple digits so long that even 97 feels cool.
I love almost every part of summer. The warm days–hot ones are even better, the school breaks, fresh fruit and veggies, I could go on and on. The only thing I don’t like is that ice cream truck. You know how children get happy when they hear the music? I get annoyed. I’m with you Lorri, I’d rather buy the ice cream bars at the store for a fraction of the price. Then I can offer them AFTER dinner, as opposed to right before which is when the truck always comes to terrorize me. :/
I love summer because usually that’s the time I come home to see family and old friends. 🙂 That makes me very happy. Also, then I can buy ice cream and cereal, etc. for reasonable prices. And that probably makes me fat. 🙂
I totally am with you on the snack and lunch. We did a few sports camps this summer, and it really tried me to be prepared like that. And to find snacks and lunches wheat, dairy, and egg free makes it even harder.
I did this one other summer, taking a class during the day, come home and have to make dinner. I’ll be doing it again in August. All the running around, errands, drop-off, pick-up, and then having to keep the house in order and dinner on the table. I do not know how people work full-time jobs or have their kids in school. It is completely exhausting to me.
Summer — I love the relaxed time, the reading and library trips, the extra nature study, and the fresh tomatoes from our garden. But I dislike the heat intensely.
Becky – a heat index of *only* 97? Oh, that is just so wrong!
Tami – WHY does that ice cream truck come right at/before dinner? He would make so much more money at around 3PM when the heat is at its peak and it’s about snack time.
Jennifer, It does seem like we live at the library during the summer, too. Do you grow basil with your tomatoes? That’s my favorite. I got too late of a start with both basil and tomatoes this year, but I’ll still have a least a little of both before the frost gets them in October.
