Winter Expedition

We’re finally getting back to school after a l-o-n-g winter break. I meant to get restarted last Monday, but Certain People Who Won’t Be Named went on a snowshoeing expedition. OK – it was Boo.

He and other members of his Boy Scout troop headed out in the wee hours of Monday morning and drove 2 hours to the trail head. Then they loaded up their sleds with all the food and supplies they’d need for the next few days, donned their snowshoes and headed out.

They trekked for 6 miles and ascended an additional 1,000 feet plus in elevation. They stopped at a hut just shy of the Continental Divide. Some of the boys built a snow cave to sleep in – in the negative 20 degree overnight temps!

The next day they went sledding. Somebody built a ramp out of snow, all the better to catch some serious air. Or so I’m told.

Here’s Boo going airborne –

And his buddy, who crashed.

A splendid time was had by all.

It was a tough trip – for a mom staying home. Boo had never been snowshoeing and doesn’t have any winter sports experience beyond sledding. He had new hiking boots, which he wore constantly for 3 days to break in, but I worried about his feet. I made him swear that if his feet began to hurt that he would tell an adult and ask for help with moleskin. Blisters would ruin his trip and there was no way to get back to the car at the end except on his own two feet. No sitting out or changing to sneakers. And then there was his backpack. He took all the necessary supplies and nothing more, but that pack weighed 15 pounds.

He did fine, of course.

He needed a little help at the very end with his pack and his feet were fine. At the end of three days he returned flush faced and worn out. That evening he was the most subdued that I’ve ever seen him, except that time we took him to Disneyland and he fell asleep before dinner and didn’t wake up until the next morning.

He had a grand time.

A is for Assignments

Here’s my first Alphabet Project photo – A is for Assignments.

It’s not that good of a picture. These are my children’s assignment baskets. Once upon a time they could hand me a completed assignment and I’d correct it and return it to them right away. With the arrival of Pipsqueak and Bip’s starting kindergarten, I just can’t get to correcting assignments very quickly. So I put two baskets in our bookshelves to hold all the math sheets and workbooks until I can get to them. It is so much better than having them sit on the kitchen table, getting moved from place to place, getting mixed in with the mail.

If you’d like to play along with my Alphabet Project, post your A picture to your blog, or Flikr, Photoshop or other photosharing site and post the link in my comments for today. You can write as little or as much as you’d like about it. Oh yeah, putting a link in my comments will most likely send it into my moderation queue, so don’t worry if you don’t see it right away. I’ll find it and approve it.

PS. We had a bit of an unusual week last week, with snowshoeing and moving furniture and getting ready for guests, so I wasn’t able to blog at all. But it was all worth telling you about, so I’ll try to make up for it this week.

Epiphany 2011

Someone recently found my blog through a search for “is it too late for epiphany blessing”. The answer is no! Epiphany is the 12th day of Christmas, so it is always January 6th. We may celebrate it in church on the closest Sunday, but I think you can bless your home on either day. Kind of like how Washington’s birthday is February 22, but we observe it on the third Monday of February. You can eat your cherry pie either day. You do make cherry pie for Washington’s birthday, don’t you? That reminds me of a funny story from my childhood. Remind me to tell you sometime when I’m not typing with one hand.

Anyway, here is the link to the Epiphany blessing we use. Just change the last number to reflect the correct year. But you knew that, right?

The Alphabet Project

Here’s my plan. Every two weeks for the rest of the year I will take one picture that represents a pre-scheduled letter of the alphabet. I’ll post the pictures here on my blog.

If you’d like to join me, I’m posting the schedule. My main objective is just to have fun with this. A side point is that I’d like to improve my photography skills, which up until now are “point, shoot, and Photoshop.” Whether I’ll actually get better remains to be seen since I don’t have time to take an actual photography class. I’m trying to find good resources on the internet, but Pipsqueak is pretty attached to me. Literally, sometimes. Makes it hard to research.

Ok, so here’s my schedule.

New Beginnings

I love the New Year. I love a blank journal and new calendar. I love the idea of a fresh start. So many opportunities lie ahead. So much possibility.

I started to write a totally different post yesterday, but sometimes you start writing and just end up with something else. I usually just go with it.

I meant to tell you that we’d had a very difficult December, behavior-wise, so this New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day were delightful. We built Legos, made Shrinky Dinks, watched Star Trek TNG and ate cherry-almond eggnog bread. We ate our traditional New Year’s Day leftovers for dinner (I just made that up) and watched the Rose Parade. Not at the same time, of course. The Rose Parade has been a part of my New Year’s Days ever since I can remember. We’d watch it live and without interruption on KTLA. Channel 5, if I remember correctly. Now we watch it on HGTV, live, no commercials. Its the only way to go.

I’ve got a couple of changes in mind for this year. We’re going to move some furniture around and do a little more decorating. We’ve got to get our deck fixed and the house painted, too. Personally, I’d like to get back to blogging more. And look, I’ve already been at it two days in a row! And I’d like to learn to take better pictures.

A couple of years ago in the knitting blog world, there was a project called the ABC Along. The point was to work your way through the alphabet in pictures. Every two weeks a different letter was assigned and you took a picture to correspond with that letter. I’ve poked around and it doesn’t look like they are doing it this year. I don’t want to just steal the name ABC Along, but I’m stealing, er, borrowing the idea. Maybe I’ll come up with a different name. But in any case, I’ll be posting my pictures to my blog. So I’ll be working on my photography AND posting regularly. Yay, me!

If you’d like to join me in photographing the alphabet, please do! I’m going to post a schedule, mostly to keep myself on track, but it’ll be a guideline for anyone who wants to play along. If I get enough interest, I’ll think up a new name for the alphabet project (ooo, that’s a good name!) and make a little button.

He Came

The last day of 2010 and the first day of 2011 were filled with wonderful moments of family bliss. If you only knew what had really been going on here during the past month, you’d understand what a welcome change these days were. The oldest two children were in serious danger of not getting Christmas presents. We even told them so, and it wasn’t an idle threat.

You’d think they would have shaped up on Christmas Eve, but no. At around 3:30 in the morning, Philip got up to tell them to be quiet and alert them that their new no-earlier-than wake up time was now 7:15.

At 4:30 I got up to tell them to be quiet and that now they could not get up until 7:30 and if I had to tell them to be quiet again that there would be no presents for them. And for goodness sake, everybody get back into their own beds.

I heard them get up at the appointed hour and thunder downstairs, sounding for all the world like 12 children instead of 3. Boo came back up and into our room. He looked at us with such relief and said simply, “He came!”

He meant Santa, of course. But in seeing in his face the realization of how his behavior had jeopardized his Christmas presents and the happiness that he came anyway, I got struck with the true meaning of Christmas.

We are sinners and we’ve been warned. Time and time again we fail just to do as we’re told. We swear we’ll do better and maybe we do, at least for a little while. Then we fail again or fail in a different way. And yet, He came. We totally don’t deserve it.

How blessed we are to be loved so unconditionally that the best gift ever came anyway.

Yes, Boo, He came.

Looking Back

As I sit here typing, the snow is coming down and our lows tonight are going to dip past 0 degrees. Wind chill will be -20. Negative twenty. Fortunately Philip came home early and he doesn’t have to go back to work until next year. We are stocked up with winter storm essentials – toilet paper and eggs. We haven’t had much snow this season at all, so we’re hoping for enough to sled.

Looking back at this last year is always fun, so here it goes.

In January I turned 40. I got some pretty good gifts!

In February I was happy to start baking bread again and Boo became a Boy Scout.

March brought two new family members – our kitties Mittens and Cinnamon.

We traveled to Tucson for Easter in April where we attended the vigil mass and were the godparents for my cousin’s son.

I finally admitted in May what I’d known since the end of February – that we were expecting another baby!

June found us sailing away to Mexico.

In July I reflected upon the things we learned during our first year of living in Colorado.

Pumpkin Girl auditioned for the Nutcracker in August.

I got brave in September and shared some pages out of my watercolor journal. Only one person commented (thank you, Jani!)!!! Ouch. 😉

As October came to an end, our little Pipsqueak arrived and Boo turned 12, all in the same week. Amazing.

Speaking of Pipsqueak, November was tough on him as he fought off jaundice and had kidney ultrasounds.

We wrapped up the year remembering Becca on her seventh birthday and celebrating Pumpkin Girl as she turned ten.

All in all, a good year! I’m looking forward to seeing what next year brings.

Getting Cleaned Up

I slept through most of 2010. My pregnancy wiped me out and my house suffered for it. I actually started regretting the choice of home that we bought. I thought it was too small, which if you’ve seen my house in real life, you know is ridiculous. Our house isn’t huge, but it fits us all nicely with more than enough room to spare. But I wasn’t happy anymore. No need to smack me though, because I’m over it.

Turns out, with me sleeping most of the time and trying to school the children the rest of it, our home sweet home turned into a lovely depot of clutter. It wasn’t the house that I didn’t like – it was the way the house looked.

So now Pipsqueak is here and I’m much more awake, I desperately want to reclaim the home I love. And since January is a time for fresh starts, I’m not the only one wanting to get cleaned up.

Clean Mama has declared that January is Cleaning Month. She is going to get her house cleaned in 15 minutes a day for 5 days a week and she’d like us -the general internet public- to join her. Go to the link above and leave her a comment that you’re joining her and you’ll be entered to win a $50 gift certificate for Clean Mama printables. You don’t need a blog to participate.

Ten

Ten years ago I was pregnant. The fun and excitement of Christmas was over and we were enjoying the peace and quiet of the days that follow. Our baby was due during the first week of the new year and we were mostly ready.

I’d taken a walk with my mom that afternoon. It was a crisp, clear day in a Maryland suburb of DC. The baby felt really low. Really low.

I decided that it was as good a day as any to wash the cover on the infant car seat. I threw it in the washing machine with some other items. It was done drying by the time Phil got home so I had him install the car seat into the car. Just so we’d be ready.

In the meantime I sat on the floor, folding the rest of the laundry. My mom was in the kitchen with Boo. I felt two pops. My water broke!

We didn’t leave for the hospital for another hour. During the short ride to Andrews AFB, my contractions grew stronger. By the time we arrived it was clear that I was definitely in labor, but they put me in the labor and delivery triage room where I continued to labor.

I will spare you the details of the complete chaos and buffoonery that followed when they finally realized that not only was I really in labor, but that the baby was coming RIGHT NOW!

I did make it to the delivery room just fine before I pushed twice (please don’t hate me) and our little Pumpkin Girl was born.

All 5 pounds, 12 ounces of her. Thick black hair and big brown eyes. Sugar and spice and everything nice.

Happy Birthday, Pumpkin Girl! You bless us every day with your beautiful smile, you dancing feet and your quiet, but funny sense of humor. You are a princess among the princes, the crown jewel of our little kingdom. Proof that every good and perfect gift comes from above.

Last Minute Links

Here we are, the day before the day before Christmas. I hope your Advent has been full of joy.

Don’t forget that on Christmas Eve you can track Santa with NORAD. Next year Boo will be old enough to volunteer with the NORAD folks, so he’s hoping that he and his dad can get a good time slot.
NORAD tracks Santa

You can also email Santa all the way up to Christmas morning, just in case you forgot. Santa is all high-tech, so he’ll be receiving his email while en route. He’ll even send you a personal reply.

This has nothing to do with Christmas, but it’s a freebie too good not to pass along. You can get a free Sweater Stone by requesting one before the end of the year. If you’ve got clothing that pills, this is a good way to get those pills off.

And lastly, you may have already seen the Social Network Christmas, but here it is again. I bet you’ll want to watch it again, or if you haven’t seen it, please take the time to see it now. It’s totally worth it. I get chills and teared up every time I see it. There is another version out there, but this one is the best.
